New Coldplay Single “Violet Hill”
April 29, 2008, 11:12 am
Filed under: New Music | Tags: , ,

This is a new Coldplay.

The band has done a pretty good job of keeping leaks from their upcoming LP (Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends) off of the internet, and eventually decided to put this up for free on their site as of today.

While many scoff at the idea of Coldplay as a legitimately talented rock band, there’s all sorts of critic hushing going on in “Violet Hill.” I hear the Brian Eno in the Bullet the Blue Skyness of the pounding drums and echoed vocals, and I think I’ll stop there and save the rest for my album review.

The track will be up for free download for exactly one week, here.

EDIT: They give the song away for free, but then they take it off the internet. I knew EMI would still manage to suck. If you’re having the same problems as I am getting that “instruction email,” you can check out a stream here.

santogold

Portishead Third
Quite simply one of the best albums of the year, possibly Portishead’s greatest acheivement (yes, including Dummy). I absolutely love this. I’ve already gone on and on about that.

Dizzee Rascal Maths + English
This is pretty much considered a 2007 release at this point, but Dizzee’s 3rd perfect hip hop record comes out stateside this week via Def Jux, with 3 exclusive bonus tracks.

Estelle Shine
The sophomore release by British singer Estelle, features the hit single “American Boy” (that I don’t really like, for some reason). The album features production by everyone from Kanye to John Legend to Mark Ronson, Wyclef to Will.I.Am., etc. etc.

Madonna Hard Candy
No, I absolutely am not waiting overnight at Roseland to get into the Madonna show on Wednesday. That’s just silly. Anyway, a bunch of these tracks already leaked last week, and I gave them a pretty unfavorable mini-review. However, I’m sure they will grow on me, and I still love “4 Minutes.” It’s Madonna. EDIT: It’s growing on me.

The Roots Rising Down
The 9th studio album from the Phillie hip hop band. There may already be a video for every track on this, but I’m excited for the official release none-the-less (Patrick Stump and all).

Santogold Santogold
The debut LP from Brooklyn’s Santogold, an eclectic indie-pop singer following the footsteps of M.I.A.. Every track on this is incredible, whether it’s the pop/rock “L.E.S. Artistes” or the reggae/dance/electro “Shove It” or “Creator,” this is another of my picks for the ‘08 Top 10.

Check out a complete list of releases for tomorrow at Newmusictipsheet.com and Largehearted Boy.

New Nas “War is Necessary” Clip From Grand Theft Auto 4

Yes, you read that right. A leak via a video game. Welcome to 2008. “War is Necessary” from Nas’ upcoming album, Nigger. This snippet is taken from the new Grand Theft Auto 4 game. I’ve already read a few unfavorable takes on this track, either for the message (which seems pretty complex) or the beat (which seems pretty, uh…awesome). Love. It.

viva la vida

Above is the cover for the oddly named (that’s generous) Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, the new Coldplay album due June 17. The band also announced today that they will be playing two free shows, one in London and one in NY @ MSG (on June 23). Yes, that’s a free Coldplay show at MSG. Umm..

Details for the show will be announced on Coldplay.com tomorrow (Tuesday) @ 7:15 EST. You will also be able to download the new single, “Violet Hill,” for free.

I guess I need to get into that show….

Kate Nash At Webster Hall in New York This Week
April 25, 2008, 2:57 pm
Filed under: Random Poprok | Tags: , ,

Kate Nash played Webster Hall this week on Wednesday and Thurday, and I was lucky enough to catch the Wednesday show after a few more tickets were released. The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players aside (sorry, didn’t like it), the show was amazing.

Kate Nash is as cute as a fucking button (not to be confused with Fuck Buttons, my #1 fav band with the word “fuck” in their name), and she slammed the crap out of her keyboards on many a track (including “Mariella,” above). “Mouthwash,” my favorite track off Made of Bricks was also brilliant…and was very fast (and is also above).

BLK JKS, the reggae/rock Johannesburg band that will hopefully put “Lakeside” on their upcoming full length (After Robots) so it can be on my 2008 playlist, recently graced the cover of Fader’s Africa issue and performed a special performance of their song “Molalatladi” for the magazine’s Open Bar series at Heathers in the East Village on Wednesday (that was one sentence, btw). Check it out, above.

coldplay violet hill

My Coldplayroks.

NME announced today that they will include a free 7” vinyl copy of the band’s first single from their upcoming LP, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (that is a mouthful - from now on I’m calling it “DAHF”). The 7” will feature the track “Violet Hill,” as well as an exclusive song, “A Spell a Rebel Yell,” that won’t be available anywhere else (really, what is up with these titles?). The NME issue will be available May 7th.

Also, 1Live, a German rock radio station, has announced that they will air the exclusive radio premiere of “Violet Hill” on April 29th. For those of us who cannot read German:

1Live exclusively found out that the brandnew single by Chris Martin and Co. will have radio premiere on April 29th. The song is called “Violet Hill” and of course you will hear it at first at 1Live. The brandnew and fourth album by Coldplay will be called “Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends” and released on June 13th. The producer Brian Eno mixed up two songs a couple times so that there will be even more songs.

Thanks Coldplaying for the translation.

“DAHF” hits stores on June 17th.
